A big part of Albury’s history, the building we now occupy has seen good times and special moments for the town on the border.
Formerly the location of traditional old Irish pub Paddy’s Bar, a much-loved local favourite on the NSW border, the venue now encompasses a main dining area as well as a refurbished Paddy’s and Cactus Bar.
The venue sits in a hotel built in 1939 called the New Albury Hotel which served the Albury community for 80 years.
It is a five-storey heritage-listed pub with a commanding street presence.
Beer Deluxe represents everything fun and passionate about a local spot.
The hotel was designed by W. H. Merritt, an architect and engineer from Melbourne, and built for the Richmond N. S. Brewing Company Pty. Limited from 1939 to 1939 by Snider Constructions.
First named Hotel Albury it later became known as the New Albury Hotel. It was – at five stories high – the first high-rise building in Albury.
Indeed its imposing scale was the source of talk around the town and media attention. On 29 April 1939 the Border Morning Mail ran a photograph of Albury taken from the top storey of the hotel under construction.
Another photo shows construction workers building the hotel noting in a caption that “workmen appear to be quite at home more than 100 feet [30 metres] above the ground”.
A report in the Border Morning Mail on 24 June 1939 noted that “rapid progress was being made” with the hotel’s construction. The expectation was that the bar would be opened immediately the hotel was completed – on Saturday 1 July – and “as soon as the present plans are completed a new block, comprising 30- bedrooms, is to be added to the rear… In addition a dance floor is to laid on the roof”.
On 1 July 1939 the same newspaper reported that “nearly 100 skilled workmen have been busy for three weeks fitting up the bar of the new Albury Hotel”.
Today we are proud of our history in this building, and excited by its future.
